FYI: You can use EasyBSD (which is free http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1) to re-write the windows MBR with a single click (thus removing the Ubuntu loader).

Thanks for this very useful article.
I had the same problem - wanting to remove Ubuntu dual boot. I tried your method, with success, but there were a few worrying moments.
I booted up the Windows XP Home setup disk. After I typed 'r', it asked wihich Windows I wanted to work with. Not knowing what to do I entered '1', and it seemed to work.
When I entered the 'fixmbr' command at the Windows prompt, I got a very severe warning about the dangers of using this command. I carried on anyway and 'fixmbr' worked. I then entered 'exit and the system rebooted. (Remove the Windows Setup CD)
Then came the worrying bit. When it got to the place where the dual boot message used to appear the system seemed to hang, with the HDD light on continuously. After a couple of minutes with nothing else happening, in desparation, I hit the Restart button on the processor. Windows then continued to boot up normally.
I hope this helps anyone else trying this procedure.
