How to fix the ialmrnt5 display driver error
I’ve been having a problem with my graphics adapter for a while now.
What happens is that my computer freezes up for about 10 seconds, then resizes the monitor resolution to 640×480 and displays everything in 4 colors. An error box then pops up with some nonsense about the ialmrnt5 driver malfunctioning, and I’m forced to reboot the PC to get back to my normal display resolution.
The odd thing about this error is that it doesn’t occur when I’m performing any graphics-intense functions – it usually happens when my PC is just sitting there, minding its P’s and Q’s, and I move the mouse to get the monitor to turn on. (hmm, maybe it’s a power-save feature error?)
Anyway, some research suggests that installing the latest Intel video drivers will fix the problem. (Update: Page is down. Here is a cached copy.)
- Download the drivers from here (Update: Site looks down. Here is a cached copy.)
- Install and follow the instructions.
I haven’t had any problems since making the update — I’ll update if I do.

Thank you for posting this. I am having the same error. Only, mine comes when I try to run this little DOS program. I’ll run the update. Thanks again!

I’m having the same problem, and I treid to install the latest driver. However, Intel hasn’t updated the drivers for my video card since November 11. 2007, if I remember correctly, and I already have the latest version.
Any suggestions on what I should do next?

i get the same message,if i update the driver i get a blue screen after 10 seconds,i found that desinstalling the intel or dell driver and cancelling the found new hardware at start up keep my computer running very good…but without display driver!
so it is a software problem or a bad intel product….again!!

If the driver update doesn’t fix it run a diagnostic on your RAM. I had the same error with a PC, and resolved it by testing and replacing the RAM. Another sign that it may be your RAM is screen artifacting. Use the bootable Memtest at http://www.memtest.org/. If you see red, replace your RAM.

unfortunately all, I’m convinced that most of you will never find a resolution to this issue short of replacing your video card. Sorry Eddie, but this time, you just didn’t get it.

didn’t i? updating the driver worked fine for me. haven’t had a problem in over 2 years.

‘Ello there. I haven’t found a complete solution, but the 16-year-old anime obsessed otaku has found a slight help to the issue.
Upon much detailed reading, I received much help by adjusting the hardware acceleration.
To do so, do to your desktop, right-click, go to Properties > Settings Tab > Advanced > & Troubleshoot Tab.
Originally mine was on Full, and by putting it on None, I’ve reduced it to where my computer won’t crash, or give me too much issue. But it isn’t perfect. I’m convinced the issue isn’t completely solved because my computer is simply old.
Hope that helped!

Hello, i wish to thanks for this solution. It works. Now i think that something was broken in display driver after instalation of some program. because driver i have installed now (latest from intel) is the same as was installet previously. But now all is working properly :)
(in my case eroor occured after i have run some .wmv files), screen went black, then after about a minute was caming back with this error, and broken resolution.
Now everything is works for me :)
Thanks a lot one more time :)

Drop Windows 7 on it and you should be gtg.
Or better yet, buy a new comp with Win7 and a real video card in it.
Otherwise…try http://www.driveragent.com or similar site to find updated drivers.

I just got Sims 3 today and within 6 hours this error popped up three times! The third was after updating my drivers from the Dell website. I haven’t tried any of the other posted comments yet but I surely will. If anyone has some suggestion of which method might be best I use a Dell desktop with Windows XP…it’s about 5 years old, perhaps 6. Thanks for any future help!

A SOLUTION… at least for me.
I was having this exact same problem with one game.
By trial and error, I discovered that if before I play the game,
I change Display Properties / Settings … Screen Resolution to as low as it can go and change the Color Quality to lowest.
The screen doesn’t look right, but I then start the game… which looks fine.
No crashes…. everything continues as it should.
When I close out the game, I change resolution back to highest.
I suspect it frees up more video memory, but the important thing is it works!

I think for some (with the random rebooting) it’s a hardware issue; I have three of computers with the 845G and one of them randomly crashes all of the time, whether it’s running Linux or Windows. They all use the same driver. (Linux spontaneously freezes usually while at the desktop and Windows BSoDs at any time).

I had the same trouble with my computer. I am running a 2006 Dell Dimension E310 desktop with Windows XP. Every time I try to run a game (Sims 2, Age of Mythology, even the original Sims1), my computer resizes to the resolution stated in the OP, and I get the same message about the ialmnrt5 driver going to crap.
I went to try and update this driver, but I have the latest version, and I have not seen updates on it since about 2007. I am looking to download a new driver, but I don’t know where to start…
