List of Patriotic Songs / Songs about the Good Ol USA

June 12, 2006 on 3:55 pm | In lists, music, americana |

In honor of America’s upcoming birthday, I thought I’d compile this list of “contemporary” patriotic songs about the USA. The reason I put “contemporary” in quotes is that some of these songs are at least 20 years old, which I’ll be the first to admit, isn’t exactly cutting edge. (For example, Lee Greenwood’s God Bless the USA)

What I mean by “list of contemporary patriotic songs” is that I’m excluding 50 and 100 year-old classics such as “America the Beatiful” and “Yankee Doodle.” If you want a list of those songs, please consult your local kindergarten teacher. :-)

These songs about the USA are in no particular order.

Living in the Promiseland
by Willie Nelson
Memorable Line: Living in the Promiseland, Our dreams are made of steel. The prayer of every one, To know how freedom feels. There is a winding road, Across shifting sand And room for everyone, Living in the Promiseland.

God Bless the USA (Proud to be an American)
by Lee Greenwood
Memorable Line: “And I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free. And I wont forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.”

Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)
by Toby Keith
Memorable Line: American Girls and American Guys, We’ll always stand up and salute, We’ll always recognize, When we see Old Glory Flying, There’s a lot of men dead, So we can sleep in peace at night, When we lay down our head.

America
by Neil Diamond
Memorable Line: Everywhere around the world, They’re coming to America. Ev’ry time that flag’s unfurled, They’re coming to America. Got a dream to take them there, They’re coming to America. Got a dream they’ve come to share, They’re coming to America.

Born Country
by Alabama
Memorable Line: I was born country and that’s what I’ll always be. Like the rivers and the woodlands wild and free. I got a hundred years of down home running through my blood. I was born country and this country’s what I love

America Will Survive
by Hank Williams Jr.
Memorable Line: Cause you can’t scare us out, and you can’t make us run, we’re them boys and girls with freedom and fun. We say grace and we say ma’am, If they don’t like that, we give less than a damn. We’re from North California and South Alabam’ And all they’ve done is unite this whole land. There’s no more Yankees and Rebels this time. But one united people that stand behind. America can survive.

This Ain’t No Rag, It’s a Flag
by Charlie Daniels
Memorable Line: Our people stand proud. The American crowd is faithful, loyal and tough. We’re good as the best and better than the rest. And you’re gonna find out soon enough, When you look up in the sky, And you see the eagle fly. You better know he’s a heading your way. Cause this ain’t no rag it’s a flag And it stands for the USA.

Riding With Private Malone
by David Ball
Memorable Line: It was a young man named Private Malone. Who fought for his country and never made it home. But for every dream that’s shattered, another one comes true. This car was once a dream of his, back when it was new. I know I wouldn’t be here if he hadn’t tagged along. That night I was riding with Private Malone. Oh,thank God,I was riding with Private Malone
