It’s Hard to Cancel Angie’s List Subscriptions – Beware
Since I recently purchased a home, I signed up for Angie’s List last month. If you’re not familliar with the site, it’s a website where consumers can rate a variety of service businesses – plumbers, roofers, window guys, etc. It’s not free – a membership to Angie’s List runs about $6/month in my city. They say that this pay-for-play business model keeps the ratings more genuine. That may be true, but I don’t really see a lot of value in the service so I chose to cancel my membership after just one month.
Boy was I in for a shocker – the “Manage my account” feature of their website does not allow cancellations! Annoying, right? Instead, you have to call, email, or FAX them a cancellation request. I first emailed, then thought that the sort of company that makes cancelling so difficult would probably lie & say they never received my email. So I followed up with a phone call & used an annoyingly slow “automated” cancellation feature. (I use quotes around “automated” because it’s not that at all – you just read your information into a recorder.)
The internet is filled with horror stories about people having a hard time cancelling Angie’s List.
here’s one
here’s one
here’s one
here’s one
Wish I’d seen those before joining. Oh well. Let that be a lesson to me – I should have used a one-time use credit card number for any recurring type subscriptions that I’m not sure I want to recur.
Tip: If you’re thinking of joining, try using code “FREE” to save the membership fee. (Or check Retail Me Not for a newer coupon code.)

Cheryl Reed from Angie’s List here.
I read your comments with a bit of dismay and wanted to first say that we’d never lie about getting email from a member — whether it’s to cancel or renew.
While you may not agree with our cancellation and renewal policies, we do try to make them clear to folks up front when they first sign up.
You can start here: http://www.angieslist.com/angieslist/visitor/faq.aspx
And see more specifics here: http://www.angieslist.com/angieslist/aluseragreement.aspx?agree=yes
We don’t offer refunds for monthly subscriptions, but we do offer a 110 percent money back guarantee for annual subscriptions.
We also have a staff dedicated to member services, who are available 6 days a week at 1-888-888-5478 to help with cancellation — or any other issue members have. They’re expected to respond to all emails coming in. If you haven’t received a response to something you sent in, please let us know and we’ll address it.
I’m sorry you didn’t find the service valuable. We do have neighborhood specialists who can help you with specific research should you not find what you need on the site.
Congrats on the home purchase. Should you ever change your mind about Angie’s List, we’ll be around to help.
March 4th, 2010 at 9:53 am
Thanks for your response, Cheryl Reed.
At 6986 words, your Membership Agreement is 18 pages long.
Do you honestly believe that you are making the cancellation policy “clear” by burying it in there? Or are you being disingenuous?
I think you know, as well as I do, that no one reads these 18 pages before signing up. People expect the cancellation process to be as painless as the signup process. Why do you make signing up so easy, but cancellation so hard?
Here, for your reference:
March 4th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
I’m not being disingenuous at all. We think cancellation is easy — email us or call us toll-free.
Cheryl
March 4th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
Then why not make signing up just as easy, Cheryl? Why have users sign up online, when they could simply email you or call you toll-free?

Hi. I logged in earlier in the month March to make sure that your company did NOT have my credit card information on file so my membership would NOT be automatically renewed on April 1st. But you guys and girls pulled a fast one. My membership was automatically renewed even though my payment/billing information does NOT show up in my Account. This is really a bad approach for your company to take. It makes users feel like you are holding their billing information without them actually seeing that you are holding their billing information. When I logged in mid-March and did not see my credit card information on file, I was under the impression that you did not keep that information and therefore would not automatically renew my account in April. Quite the fast one, Angie’s List folk! Now I wonder if Angie’s List is on Angie’s List because I would be the first to point out this bad service user thang…And I just read your membership service announcement – SORRY, NO REFUNDS FOR MONTHLY MEMBERSHIPS! You know what…that pisses me off even more. even though it’s just $1.30. I mean…you big companies just pull fast one’s over your consumers and we are just supposed to sit back and let it fly. I guess this is where the whole concept of society of amnesiacs…We will forget about this next week and your company will continue to do the same sorts of things, and I will forget that you stole $1.30 from me. Oh well. It’s a beautiful day and the sun is shining and today is my last day on Angie’s List…So please close my account! Thanx!

I’ve been on Angie’s list for a few months now. I realized that I don’t really use the service, so I decided to cancel thinking I’d sign up again later if I needed them. When I didn’t see anything obvious on their site regarding cancellation, I headed for Bing/Google. (Search engines do a good job of uncovering processes that website owners would prefer to hide.)
Imagine my disappointment at seeing cancellation complaints filling the 5 of the top 10 search results for “Cancel Angie’s List”.
I am impressed that the Angie’s List rep responded to your blog; but I was not impressed by the content of her reply.
I assumed that it was common sense that you never -ever- make it difficult for users to do what they want to do on a website. Hiding cancellation to squeeze a few more months payments out of the lazier contingent infuriates users!
The idea that Angie’s List would pull an amateurish marketing move like this is almost embarrassing. Angie’s List attracts serious, often prolific reviewers. What did they think these well-spoken people would do when they ran up against this lapse in common sense? (Hint: look at sites like this and comments like mine.)
May 21st, 2010 at 11:25 am
Just got ensnared by this myself. I *thought* I signed up for a 1 month membership…then came the automatic renewal through on my cc. Search the web site in vain for a way to cancel, finally did a Google search and found out you need to call.
Wait time = 15 minutes.
Thanks for wasting my time Angie. Their credibility has dropped off a cliff for me. The reason I signed up in the first place was check it out before I advertised my business there. Not a chance they get those $’s now…hello Kudzu…
June 19th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
I signed up for Angie’s List via a PayPal payment. I went immediately to the payment information area to stop any future monthly fees. All I found there was where I was supposed to put the credit card info. So, I thought perhaps PayPal was a one-time thing and I’d be safe to not pay more than the first month unless I so-chose.
Wow, was I wrong. Sure enough just this morning did I get an email from PayPal saying I’d just sent Angie another payment.
What a scam.
June 23rd, 2010 at 3:29 pm
Update: I had sent an email to them asking how to cancel and resolve the situation. No response for three days, so I called and canceled. The operator said I could either wait about ten minutes or go through the automated system.
The automated system turns out to be basically a voice recorder (after each question). They then say it will be canceled within five days.
It took a couple days, but I received an email saying the membership had ended.
June 28th, 2010 at 10:14 pm
Same problem. First I used the “automated system”. After going through various voice prompts that cut me short, the system finally stated the my membership “would not automatically renew!” Next, waited for a live person, and spoke with “Amanda” who was very pleasant and professional. But after going through the information, she then said, “You’re all set – you membership won’t automatically renew.” I then repeated that this was to CLOSE and CANCEL the account.
This morning, I mailed off a Certified letter.
An experience like this is guaranteed to ensure that a subscriber will never, ever, return at any time in the future!

Yesterday I got my credit card bill and surprisingly found a charge from Angie’s List. When I called them to find out what the charge was, I was told that there was a long wait to talk to someone or I could email “MemberServices@angieslist.com”. A day later and a couple of emails with them showed the charge was for an annual automatic renewal. “It was in your membership contract.” I agree with a previous poster – nobody reads pages of legaleze. They just sent me a reply saying a refund would be applied to my credit card account and that my membership would be canceled.
So while it was not supposedly too difficult to cancel the membership and get a refund (I will post here again if I don’t see the refund), automatic renewal of an annual membership borders on the same type of underhanded methods they are in the business of reporting on. Angie’s List needs to change their business model.
ps. I didn’t find their service particularly useful.
July 23rd, 2010 at 4:45 pm
Guys and girls who have been defrauded by Angie’s List, listen clearly: They are corporate executives who wish to rob you of all your money. Immediately write them via email and demand the cancellation now and give them a timeframe to cancel within (honestly, 1 business day should be sufficient if they have the customer service that Ms. Cheryl Reed claims they have). In your email, explain that the service has not lived up to the hype and that if they do not cancel your account (with email follow up giving you a “receipt”) then you will contact the BBB and will follow up to their offices with a formal letter written by your attorney to sue them.
Cheryl Reed: your company is a thief. Your policy maybe buried in the “fine print” but does that make it right to betray your customers like that? Go ahead, get further brainwashed by Angie Hicks (the redneck leader of Angie’s List) and the rest of that exec staff. Angie’s List is just another .Com failure
September 1st, 2010 at 1:16 pm
For a website that claims to ferret out the phoneys and boogeymen of the home repair / home improvement / services industries, while shining a light on industry superstars, Angie’s List does a one-star job with its own customer service department.
It is nearly impossible to cancel an Angie’s List membership once you’ve given them your credit card number. The policy, buried in an 18 page single-type document which you click “YES” to agree to when joining online, states very narrow parameters that cancellations can be made.
“Entrapment” is a word that jumps into my mind… much more so than “Customer Service”.
Really – is this the best they can do?
I’d consider going back to Angie’s List (when we’re ready to do a home improvement project) but getting OUT of an Angie’s List subscription is literally a P.I.T.A.! So, I won’t be coming back… I’ll just check the Better Business Bureau or YELP.com
September 1st, 2010 at 4:55 pm
Check this out…Angie’s List (without my knowing that their legal mumbo jumbo deeply imbedded in their policies allowed for automatic renewaL ) renewed my membership using MY Pay Pal ACCOUNT..
I had it reversed immediately and said you have lost me as a customer because of your borderline illegal deception.
Go to Yelp ..it is free and move away from this corporate structure with the so called ” Neighborhood Specialists”
September 1st, 2010 at 4:57 pm
How can we take action against Angie’s List for covert and illegal membership practices?
Are there any attorneys out there?

I’m in the process of cancelling now – found this site just to see if other people had cancelled AL before. I think all of you are a bunch of babies at the part that AL screwed you over or robbed you. They are very clear about the fees and that it renews. I knew – so I don’t know how you people didn’t unless you didn’t bother to read. Let’s see how cancellation goes. Don’t expect anything tricky, but if they do – then I’ll report it here.
BTW, I got the membership for a short time to vet and research contractors for summer work/fixings around the house.
October 13th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
I called the number above (1-888-888-5478) provided by Cheryl. Much to my surprise a real person picked it up instantly – didn’t expect that. She was friendly and asked if I wanted to proceed w/ Cancellation over the phone or if I preferred to use the online email feature. I said, let’s just do it over the phone. She transferred me immediately. My cell phone is crap at my house so I actually got disconnected (signal failure). So I said – no biggie. I wrote a cancellation request via the online ‘Contact Us’. There is a special ‘MemberShip->Cancellation’ subject option. The next day @5:26AM an online service rep. told me that my account was set to not renew and I can still enjoy the site till the remainder of my month. Pretty clear if you ask me. I just logged on to the site and went over to the Membership Management area and sure enough it says ‘Expires on Oct 26 2010′ unlike yesterday. Everything to me looks pretty good.
Like I said before – some people complain for the sake of complaining and are a bunch of babies. Read the terms and use your head. AL has done good by me – esp. for $2.75 monthly fee.
October 23rd, 2010 at 11:29 am
I found Angie’s List helpful in general, but only needed them for a short period (about 3 months). I was pleased with the home contractors that I found through the service, but found that I could do about as well on my own with a little more leg work. After about 3 months of payment with no activity, I decided to cancel.
I initially had the same concern. Looking at the FAQ and the legal document doesn’t make it so clear how to cancel. Google brought me here. I called the number Cheryl supplied and went to the ‘Contact Us’ link. The Membership -> Cancel link is fairly straightforward once you find it, but it would go a long way if I could get there directly from the FAQ.
I’m guessing that since Cheryl didn’t mention the contact us link, that may be a newer method.

Hi Angie’s List,
I recently closed on a new house. I went to sign up for Angie’s List today to get some reviews for a few companies that I will be needing. I entered my email address, chose a password, had my credit card sitting on the desk, and then there was the “I Agree To The Terms and Conditions” button. I clicked the link to read the terms before entering my credit card.
Long story short, I skimmed through the Terms looking specifically for the cancellation and auto-renewal terms. When I read that you had to mail a “certified” request through the U.S. Mail or fax, or call in order to cancel, I exited the website without entering my credit card information.
I knew before I even typed “Angie’s List cancel” into google that I would find infuriated customers. And sure enough, the top search results were “I hate Angie’s List”, “Angie’s List scam”, “Can’t cancel Angie’s List”, “Ripped-off by Angie’s List”, etc. That is what lead me here.
True, it is stated buried in the Terms and Conditions. But on the very simple sign up screen, it doesn’t even state that the charges will be repeated, much less the nightmare corporate policy of cancellation. The Angie’s list representatives might speak with a silver tongue the tongue is nonetheless forked. The deceit is deliberate and calculated.
Here’s some advice Angie’s List. Play the cards straight when dealing business with your clientele. Sure, that Ace up your sleeve or the card being dealt from the bottom might give you an advantage temporarily, but when your customers detect the cheating, and the will, they will walk away from the table and not return.
You lost at least one eager customer today.
Adios,
Jamison

I signed up for Angie’s list using Pay Pal thinking it was a one month payment and I would have to choose to pay and to continue the service. Wrong…started to get emails from Pal Pal saying Angie,s list had billed my account. I went to the Angie’s list website to look at my billing history…guess what? No kind of billing history, statements, payment information etc. that I could find anywhere. I thought well maybe these emails from Pay Pal are just a lame phishing attempt. The next month another comes…hell I did not even know paypal offered automatic payments…I then contacted paypal and filed a complaint and they refunded my account within 2 days. By the way..where is the page on Angie’s list where you get to rate Angies’s List???? I guess they would rate pretty low judging from what people are saying on the net about them. The site was totally useless to me living in a rural area..almost none of the local services were listed and what did come up was 30-50 miles away. Kudos to Pay Pal…Phooey on Angie’s secret list:)
November 8th, 2010 at 7:51 pm
Yeah Cheryl – it’s so easy. If it were so easy, then why do I get directed to a glorified voice mail, or an online form that never gets looked at? I have tried to cancel my subscription for 5 months in a row now. I think the blogger should publish your email address so we can get our money back.
November 17th, 2010 at 12:41 pm
Ditto. VERY annoying – no other company I know of uses the same practices. I just sent them an email – let’s see how it works… Will tell anyone from now on to beware of AL. Myself, I didn’t get ANY value out of them… and now can’t even cancel my membership online. Strange that they still exists…
December 7th, 2010 at 7:04 pm
I nearly NEVER agree to automatic payments, so I was SHOCKED to see a $69 charge on my creditcard — which brought me to within $8.50 of going OVER my Limit!! Was I aware 12 months ago that I was forced/tricked into an automatic renewal? I dunno; maybe. Is there a reason that Angie’s List spams me all year long, then sends NO Notification before slamming my cc for nearly twice what I paid to enroll? YES; YES THERE IS – They wouldn’t be able to keep their lights on if they were Not DECEPTIVE. They were very polite on the phone about canceling and refunding in-full immediately (keeping my fingers crossed nothing else hits my cc in the next 48 hours). I should have canceled months ago and asked for the pro-rata refund. I found the site to be very nearly worthless. I understand that they have to control their liability, but their rules for making reports are FAR too restrictive. I had MANY businesses that I wanted to file reports about. For, I assume, the same reasons, they had no reports at all on MOST of the businesses that I wanted information about.
HUGE Waste of Time.
I’ll get more active on Yelp! and Kudzu ~
December 10th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
Well, I got my refund – posted in 2 days. Did I get the 110% they promise? No.
Got a few hours to spend reading mostly contractor’s complaints about Angie’s List? http://knaddison.com/technology/why-angies-list-sucks

I signed up fro the ONE Month deal and it has been taking it each month..Im sure it was some thing in the fine print that I DIDNT read..thats ok..fool me one time and thats all it takes..I will not ever use or tell any one about this page again..

Angies List Insulted My Company and bullies you GREAT customer Service EVAN HOCK http://www.angiesconlist.com
My Company received a poor review from a “non client”. We were able to prove the person posting was not a client however Angies List would not remove the post. Their suggestion was to have our clients purchase memberships or submit a marketing peace from their company to “our clients” and have them submit free reviews to another portion of thier site. Obviously this would promote their site and give the impression to our real clients that we support their forum. We believe this is extortion. They allowed “non clients” to post false things about our company and then told us to have our real clients purchase memberships to dilute the bogus posts. We actually caved into this extortion and purchased memberships for our actual clients so people would see real reviews not just bogus posts. Angies List claimed that because we purchased the memberships for our clients they felt we fabricated the postings and deleted our real clients memberships. Obviously this is a harmful action.
Here is what Evan Hock, Operations Manager @ Angies Help Desk Wrote To Our Company.
Because We Did Not Follow Their Suggestions To Promote Their Company He Insults Us By Saying Our Method Was Fraudulent
Wonderful Customer Services ” Evan” We Appreciate Your Comments AND FALSE ACCUSATIONS
Here are his comments: Please reach out to Mr. Hock and tell him what you think about his customer service skills towards a forced member here is his number and email: EVANHO@ANGIESLIST.COM or Phone: 317-396-9622
HIS COMMENTS : Further, I have reason to believe that your involvement in gathering some or all of these reports is beyond the mere purchase of the memberships. I believe that you have set up these accounts, and have submitted the reports on your own business in an effort to falsely inflate your rating on our service. It should be noted that the penalty for self reporting is a one year suspension from the list, during which time your profile would not be available in category/keyword searches, and would contain a notification of the activity we found. Angie’s List has not suspended your business while our investigation is being conducted, but we reserve the right to do so. We will be removing the aforementioned reports today. By doing so, Angie’s List is in no way singling you out. Rather we are acting in accordance with our published guidelines. To not enforce the guidelines would be to give you special treatment, which Angie’s List cannot and does not do.
If you need help gathering service reports by legitimate means, we have a number of free tools at your disposal. Most notably, we offer a program called “Fetch” through which we will contact your clients on your behalf to gather feedback on your business. I understand you may have thought it necessary to purchase memberships for your clients, but with nearly 50,000 Angie’s List members in the area, I think you might be surprised how many of your 9000 happy clients are already members, and would thus be eligible to give you a report. If you’d like information on this free program, please let me know.

I’m a software developer, and Angie’s List is pulling a fast one with the cancelation. There is no obvious link for canceling. Take me 2 seconds to create a link. It’s not hard for a website developer to create a cancelation page with a form for the user to fill out and submit to access an API that handles the cancelation. I know firsthand cause I do this for a living. Nope, Angie’s List intentionally makes it a little more difficult to cancel, in the hopes you are too lazy to follow through. Match.com used to pull this crap too. Making it difficult to cancel, and not allowing you to opt out of auto-renewal. Guess Match.com got in trouble for it, cause they changed that. Write you’re Better Business Bureau and file a complaint. That may get something resolved.
February 21st, 2011 at 9:36 pm
Yeah canceling is a BS thing there, and now i get to spend my time off hunting down information on how to cancel.. maybe the BBB will have better luck
March 24th, 2011 at 9:39 am
This is definitely a problem they need to get taken care of. I bet there’s no review for angies list on angies list… :/
March 24th, 2011 at 10:01 am
If you are being billed via paypal you can also block them from billing you via paypal while you hope angies list cancels your account.
Login to your paypal account, and go to the page:
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/customerprofileweb?cmd=_manage-paylist
Click on “Angie’s List” and then click the cancel button. I’m sure Angie’s list will be more willing to cancel your account once they lose access to your money.
March 29th, 2011 at 8:52 pm
No problem here, I just canceled via the “help” form on the website. Sent the request lastnight, got confirmation today.
March 30th, 2011 at 9:14 pm
I clicked on ‘Contact us’ and used the online messaging tool to send Angie’s List my cancellation notice.
April 23rd, 2011 at 2:14 pm
I just posted my company on angies list. really getting pissed off that I keep calling and calling them and they don’t even answer the phone. it rings until the phone company voice that says to give up and try again later. I now regret putting my company on the list but I can’t figure out how to remove my company.
April 27th, 2011 at 6:56 pm
I have been an Angie’s list member for almost a year. I have found absolutely no value whatsoever in my membership. Very few companies are actually reviewed. When I looked for companies in my area, they gave me names of companies 30 miles away. It was a joke. The reviews are no better than what you could find on yelp.com. If you’re looking to find a contractor for house work, you can get someone through servicemagic.com, which is a totally free service.
The Angie’s list agreement says you can call, fax, email, or send a letter by certified mail in order to cancel. I think that certified mail is the best way to go, because you have proof that they received your notice of cancellation. Here’s the relevant language in the agreement:
YOU MAY CANCEL YOUR ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP BY PROVIDING ANGIE’S LIST WITH NOTICE OF YOUR DESIRE BY CONTACTING ANGIE’S LIST BY FIRST CLASS CERTIFIED MAIL AT 1030 EAST WASHINGTON STREET, INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA 46202, BY TELEPHONE AT (866) 623-6088, BY FACSIMILE AT (866) 670-5478 OR BY EMAIL AT memberservices@angieslist.com.
I’m an attorney, and I’m going to send my cancellation by mail. If they charge my credit card, I will dispute the charge with my credit card company and file a complaint against them with my state’s attorney general’s office.
I hate Angie’s List. It’s a massive ripoff. F**K YOU ANGIE!
April 27th, 2011 at 7:22 pm
Oh, one more thing…
I just want to respond to a couple of the d-bags above who say stupid crap like “it’s your fault, you should read the fine print.”
My answer to that – suck it.
No one has time to read that crap. I’m a lawyer and I don’t read that crap. f you actually took the time to read every single word of your credit card agreements and addenda, rental lease, employment agreement, cell phone contracts, car loan terms, student loan terms, cable contract, electric agreement, gas bill, water/sewer service, waste collection service, health insurance, life insurance, car insurance, renters/homeowners insurance, flood insurance, bank agreements, financial prospectives, investor proxy letters, 401k, IRA, Social Security, DMV license renewal information, child day care agreement, 529 college account, warranty and proof of purchase of every item in your house over $50, return policy at Target, and any other crap that normal people have to deal with, you would never leave the f**king house. Now, all of those things are much more important than a stupid fee for access website like Angie’s list, so if anyone at Angie’s list sincerely believes that people actually read that agreement, they are delusional and can go to hell. Bite me Angie.
May 3rd, 2011 at 9:23 pm
well angies list is a 50/50 scam… they will make bank off you 4 joining,, and they make it hard to quit..ive seen many of these credit card sites, thats how they REALLY make money… really…. well use a credit card, then you can call your cc company – dispute it.. and really quit. no problem….NO BIG DEAL! Your credit card company is on YOUR SIDE! Really…. as for some posts here…. well maybe angie her self does some posting… hehehe – and then kinda makes a lil cash from the contractors as well…. maybe sorta a blackmail thing… dunno kinda a mob like money scam huh? Angie you will rot in hell! I wonder what Angieslist rating is on her site?
May 3rd, 2011 at 9:37 pm
if angies list makes a ton of cash from ads. why do they want you to give a creditcard number? i mean really? the website makes a ton of cash via ad’s. and yet they want money from you as a consumer,, and they also solicit money from contractors as well.. I work for a plumbing contractor and we get solicitations from angieslist for some unknown reason (figure it out your self) (and angie will prob post a reply to this post -! really) angieslist is a money making machine – using a nice cute name,, but they are in it to make money. remember that! you can get the same info via BBB and using your brain (and google) and maybe ask someone you know to ask others they know about a contractor or job you need done. REALLY!
May 3rd, 2011 at 9:53 pm
one last babble rant… i bet the owner of angieslist owns a multi million dollar house – with house keepers, and a few nice very nice cars, and takes very nice vacations- very sweet ones, all because of our credit card payments…. a nice biz plan for her….dont ya think.. huh
May 5th, 2011 at 9:57 pm
Just update your payment information before the renewal date, and change the name on credit card, the expiration date, and the card number.
May 7th, 2011 at 2:46 am
Netflix takes 15 seconds to cancel their membership and can be done with a few clicks of the button…if Angie’s List was considerate of customer experience, they’d make the process this easy too and probubly make more money too!
Netflix stock is over $200 a share…how much is angie’s list worth?!
May 13th, 2011 at 1:00 pm
I found it easy to cancle on phone i also found it a worthless site in my area
May 31st, 2011 at 7:10 pm
I signed up for an annual membership hoping for some help with a new home, only to find that all of the businesses were an hour away. I left myself a calendar notice to re-evaluate the membership, but found out that the auto renew isn’t on or near my anniversary date. I tried to find the cancellation policies through my log in, but ended up googling it as many mention above. Found out that I need to cancel no later than 5 pm eastern time the day before my auto renew. Guess what? That’s tomorrow and I am on the west coast. I called and was told the lines were really busy right now, and the shortest wait was 35 minutes. My gut was telling me something seemed strange, so I searched for cancellation issues and found this site, and many more. In the mean time, I canceled the paypal billing agreement and sent Angie’s List an email. I thought the list would help, but didn’t like the proximity of the businesses to my location, so I never really used it. Having encountered the issue with cancelling the membership will make me strongly dissuade any one I know from signing up.

well,, if anyone needs a contractor of any type… ask for refs, ask your friends, and check the contractors license number online via your states license agency for any complaints, also check the local BBB, add up all the numbers and do the math your self… angies list has coupons for local vendors… dont trust that crap…. get 3 estimates from various contractors and do the math u self… and dive into to the internet world and check them out… really.. if u cant swim then ask someone u know to try to for you.. and beware of contractors (plumbers) who get paid by commision and not by the hour..use your brain and any resources you have to figure this out.. BE SMART.

Angies List sucks
Signing up was easy
Thought I had selected 1 month
Charged me for 4 months and when I noticed this Cancelling was hard.
They have lost my trust, I will actively advocate against them whenever asked.
Poor company – Good riddance

I just cancelled my Angie’s list subscription. I had signed up and loved the service, but now we moved to a new area and it’s not really used here. We moved over a year ago, so I forgot all about it, but then I saw a renewal charge on my credit card. I called Angie’s list and within 3-4 minutes, cancellation was complete and the fee has been refunded.
Good service for me :-)

Geez, after the difficulty I’ve had just trying to get them to stop sending me EMAIL, why would I EVER send them MONEY?? Same deal, once you’re ON their “list”, you can’t get off of it. My Droid locked up three times today, just by clicking on the “Unsubscribe” button that they mysteriously scroll down the page as you try to click on it…

Same here. Bad company. I hope Eddie’s site continues to come up high on the google search returns. Google and Eddie beat Angie and doesn’t need to pull crap like making cancellation hidden and getting people to sign up thinking there are reviews, but are actually just listings.

Oh no! I should have looked this up before signing up. What crazy company doesn’t have a “delete account” button these days?!
August 4th, 2011 at 12:38 pm
Just paid for a year membership and immediately tried to turn off the automatic renewal, but couldn’t find that on their site. After exchanging multiple emails, they stated that I had to request this from them, which I have done repeatedly. I asked them to make this change yesterday, so we’ll see.

Cannot believe they rate companies and make it so hard to cancel their own subscription. Unacceptable for a business.

I know it’s in the fine print that you agree to but I don’t think websites should be allowed to do auto-renew unless you yourself set the option and want it. It is really BS that they can get away with doing that. The state Attorney Generals should do something about that to make it illegal. I was going to join AL but now that I know they have that I will not be joining. It is very deceptive hiding it in the legal mumbo jumbo. They may think they are smart but it is actually a very stupid practice and will lose much more money for them because people do get outraged when they see what happens and how much time they have to spend to address the proble.

Hi df, my name is AL. Thanks for contacting us today. Let me pull up your account to help with this. One moment.
2011-09-28 11:53:14 AL
Alright,it looks like you had recently renewed with us this past summer and still have some time left on the acount. Do you have a family member or friend who might want to use the service for the remaining time?
2011-09-28 11:53:47 df
I guess I should have said “Don’t renew”
2011-09-28 11:54:15 df
It would be much better if your system provided for this rather than force me into this interaction cycle
2011-09-28 11:54:45 AL
I’m not sure I understand?
2011-09-28 11:55:15 df
I DO NOT WANT TO RENEW MY MEMBERSHIP. CANCEL THE AUTO RENEWAL
2011-09-28 11:55:42 AL
I have. But you have many months left are going to be out of the country. Do you have a friend or family member who might like to make use of the service?
2011-09-28 11:55:53 AL
We can transfer the access to them.
2011-09-28 11:56:31 df
I WILL NOT BE MOVING FOR A FEW MONTHS. I MAY USE SERVICE BETWEEN NOW AND THEN. i JUST WANT ACCOUNT TO NOT AUTO RENEW
2011-09-28 11:57:06 AL
Alright. David, I’m not trying to be difficult, please stop type-shouting at me. I apologize for the confusion.
2011-09-28 11:57:28 df
Your system just got me really annoyed.
2011-09-28 11:57:40 df
I should be able to just click a button
2011-09-28 11:57:52 df
not have to launch a chat and waste 5 minutes of my day
2011-09-28 11:58:08 df
It feels scammy
2011-09-28 11:58:18 AL
I’m sorry for any inconvenience. Again, though, your account has been set to expire. We want each cancellation to be handled by a person. For example if you’d not be able to use the serivce, it would have been wasted months. This way someone coudl have used the service.
2011-09-28 11:58:26 df
Especially for a company that is supposed to be about helping consumers
2011-09-28 11:58:44 df
sounds scammy
2011-09-28 11:58:51 df
just give us users a button to click
2011-09-28 11:59:09 df
and put a chat option or transfer option right there on page
2011-09-28 11:59:18 df
Do pass on my chat to management,…
2011-09-28 11:59:31 AL
I will. Is there anything else I can help you with today, though?
2011-09-28 11:59:41 df
No. Just pass on chat to mgt.
2011-09-28 11:59:44 df
Thanks

Our horror story regrading Angie’s list involves us purchasing “The Big Deal” service for dryer vent and line cleaning. The email received from them regarding the “deal” is dated April 19, 2011. The picture showed an aluminum foil vent line just like ours, so we ordered the service for $79 (reg. $150). The rep from Dryer Vent Wizard, “a highly rated Super Service Award winner on Angie’s List,” came to clean the vent and line on Sept. 9, 2011. We thought that he was going to get started cleaning the vent, but instead he handed us an estimate for an installation of a new dryer vent line. With a “discount” $150 (remember we had already paid &79), the balance due for the installation was an additional $129 dollars. The rep explained that they cleaned with wire brushes that could pierce the foil so they couldn’t guarantee that the line wouldn’t be damaged, nor would they be responsible for the cost of replacement if that happened. When asked why they pictured the foil type of vent hose rather than the type he described as being necessary for the “deal” to be guaranteed, he just repeated what he said before. I told him not to bother. My husband called Angie’s list and talked to a Chelsea. After hearing the story, she apologized and said that our money would be refunded. From that date, Sept. 9 until yesterday, October 22nd, we have had numerous phone calls and speaking to a Chelsea, Ashley, Joseph, Josh, Chelsea again, Maya, and Andrew, we are still trying to get our $79 refund.
Needless to say, after once again trying to get it resolved yesterday and after speaking to a fifth person(I stopped recording names), I was getting a bit testy in my tone of voice. I insisted on talking to a supervisor who could just cut us a check and get it int he mail. I also said I did not want to be put on hold for another endless amount of time and ending up disconnected again. (I suspected that they were doing it on purpose because it happened twice before I lost my temper.) Each time I called back I had to retell the entire story. I said read the records, surely you must be keeping them. Just give us our money or let me speak to someone who can. The last time I was put on hold, the Lucille Ball theme song played over and over again in a continuous loop, then, just as I thought I heard clicks that indicated someone coming back on the line, I was disconnected once again! I would like to sue them so badly, but for $79 it would be for the principle of the situation and we don’t have the time or money.
It woudl be helpful to know that they said that they had sent it to us on Sept 20th to our card ending in XXXX, but we had told them back on the 9th that the account had since been closed and had given them new info. Chelsea told my husband yesterday that they had to send the refund to the account number used to purchase the services and to call the bank. I said that was ridiculous. If they truly had, that was stupid and being the dissatisfied customer, the onus should be on them, not us, to check things out so they could refund our money as soon as possible.
Have you heard of this kind of “switch and bait, then make it impossible for the customer to get his refund” tactic happening to anyone else? If you have any advice as to what could be done to help us get satisfaction and our money back, we’d really appreciate it. We’re going to file a complaint with the BB, but want to do something more than that.
Thanks in advance for reading this complaint.

I have decided to cancel Angie’s list, and was looking for the link and ran across this site. Look out Angie, I’m pissed in advance.
