2008’s “God Save the Fan” asks what Tiger Woods did to piss Jesus off

I just finished Will Leitch’s excellent book God Save the Fan. (If you’re a sports fan, I highly recommend that you check it out.) The book was published in 2008, before Tiger Woods’ exotic sex life became late-night talk show fodder.

I thought this passage was worth posting, given that we now have the benefit of hindsight:

As to what Tiger did to “piss Jesus off,” I think we now have our answer. Heh.

In case you’re interested, the chapter goes on to make what I think is an excellent point: When athletes give thanks to God, they’re not grandstanding, nor are they trying to shove their religion down your throat. Instead, what they’re really saying is, “I’m not that great, and I don’t deserve these accolades.” In other words, they’re trying to stay humble.

Question: What is a “green score” in the context of deer or elk hunting?

Answer: A green score is an unofficial score of the horns (inches of length). It is a way to rate your animal.

I’m a Milwaukee Brewers fan.

While it was sad to see the Brewers get bounced in the NLDS by the Phillies, it was still nice to see the Brewers long post-season drought finally come to an end.

Because I am a Milwaukee Brewers fan, I am subscribed to a Milwaukee Brewers email list and have opted in to receive special offers regarding the Brewers.

Still, nothing prepared me for what I saw when I opened my email box this morning:

That’s right, if I act now, I can get a “get a Cole Hamels autographed baseball after [my] first qualifying transaction(s) using [my] Philadelphia Phillies® Extra Bases credit card.” (!!!) Since the Phillies beat the Brewers, all Brewers fans must now be Phillies fans. Makers perfect sense.

This is the problem with spam and email – it costs next to nothing to blast hundreds of thousands of people with your inane marketing messages, so why not give it a shot?

Baseball’s Mitchell Report Names Leaked

Former U.S. Senator George Mitchell will release a report today about drug use in Major League Baseball. It will reportedly contain a list of 50 players who have used steroids in the past. Various internet sources have reported that the list has already been leaked to WNBC. WNBC is, however, not printing the list.

I ran across a comment at The Big Lead that claims to have the inside scoop on the list.

I have no idea if the list is accurate.

This is what the commenter claims is the list:

Tom Brady Suspended? Not Likely.

This morning, the Blogosphere erupted with rumors that Tom Brady has been suspended “for at least 4 games” for failing an NFL drug test. The source of this rumor seems to be the Opie and Anthony radio show.

Says one pundit:

I just heard on the radio (it was Opie and Anthony so take it with a grain of salt) that Tom Brady failed a drug test and will be suspended for four games. This is nothing more than a rumor right now, but if true it would be off the charts schadenfreude.

Agreed, it would be huge schadenfreude. To me, however, this sounds plainly false – the NFL has a complex set of procedures in place for dealing with alleged violations of the substance abuse policy, including re-testing and appeal provisions. While I’m not intimately familiar with these policies, I’m quite sure that step one isn’t “Call Opie and Anthony…”

UPDATE

As I said, and as indicated here, it just ain’t true.

Pro Football Talk reports that the Opie and Anthony Show has been “reporting” the Brady suspension as part of a regular Tuesday morning gag they do with fake news stories. Apparently a lot of people didn’t get the joke.

To repeat: Tom Brady has not been suspended. Nothing to see here.

What is your Maximum Heart Rate?

The easiest and best known method for calculating your maximum heart rate is to subtract your age from 220.

Basic Formula
Max Heart Rate = 220 – Age

While this calculation is sufficient for most purposes, recent research has shown that the relationship between a person’s maximum heart rate and age is not linear. Hence, there are a number of other methods for calculaitng your maximum heart rate as well.

A University of Missouri-Columbia suggests an alternative formula of
MHR=206.3 – (0.711 × Age)

An Indiana University study recommends using the formula
MHR=217 – (0.85 × Age)

There are number of max heart rate calculators available on the internet.
