Carly Simon has finally revealed who she was referring to in the song “You’re so Vain.”

And it’s not any of the usual suspects.

In a recent interview, Carly Simon revealed that the hit song You’re So Vain references music producer David Geffen.

Not only that, she’s come out and stated that the song is not about a failed romance with the openly gay Geffen, but was instead penned while she was resentful of the effort he put into promoting Simon rival Joni Mitchell.

Years of speculation and conventional wisdom has held that the song was about Warren Beatty, or Mick Jagger, or Kris Kristofferson, or Cat Stevens, or a composite of those characters. (And others.)

But now the secret’s out. The song is indeed about about jealousy, but not the romantic type; instead, the song is the result of good old American greed.

Simon has been slowly revealing clues about the identity of the mystery person.

Given that she’s already drawn it out for years, I have a hard time believing that this is the last we’ll hear on the matter.
