How the Red Cross Lost Me As A Donor – Again
It feels great to donate blood, doesn’t it? I’ve been a lifelong blood donor, and have donated many, many gallons of my blood to the Red Cross, Memorial Blood Centers, and other organizations.
In about 2004, I stopped giving my blood to the Red Cross. The reason? They wouldn’t stop calling me. I lived in the Maryland area at the time, and as soon as I was eligible to donate (56 days after my previous donation), the twice-a-day phone calls would start. I usually let the calls go right to voicemail. Sometimes they’d leave a recorded message, sometimes a live message, sometimes they wouldn’t leave a message at all. When I did answer, I let them know that I would schedule my next donation on my own time, and asked that they stop calling me. Each time they said they’d “remove my number from the list,” but wouldn’t you know it, about a week or two later, the phone calls would start again.
This happened at least a dozen times. At least. Each time, I’d plead, “Please stop calling me, this is my cell phone, and I don’t need constant reminders from you” they’d say “Oh, we’re so sorry, OK!,” but a few weeks later, the calls would start again.
A computer glitch? Maybe. My friends didn’t seem to have the same types of issues with the Red Cross. Maybe they just weren’t as gruff or grumpy as I was. Or maybe it’s because I’m type O-Negative.
I finally managed to escape the grip of the Chesapeake & Potomac Region Red Cross by moving across the country. In my new home state, I donated my blood to Memorial Blood Centers, folks who aren’t so pushy about scheduling your next donation. One day, while at a street fair, I noticed a Red Cross donation truck and knew that I was eligible to donate, so I decided to give them another chance. After all, maybe it was just the Potomac Region that was hyper-vigilant about scheduling donations.
Nope.
Exactly 56 days later, I started getting at least one, but usually two, phone calls per day from a strange number in Omaha, Nebraska. I don’t answer calls from strange numbers, so I let the calls go to voicemail. They never left a message. I eventually looked the number up on the internet and learned that it was, lo and behold, the American Red Cross, harassing me once again. I answered the next call and asked them to stop calling, which, to their credit, they’ve done. It’s been about 2 months now and I haven’t heard a peep out of the American Red Cross.
I’m not counting them out yet, though. On that last call, I explained that I was tired of the phone calls, and that I had just donated to Memorial Blood Center, and would not be donating to the Red Cross in the future, so they may as well take me off their list. Time will tell if they really did take me off their list or if they just granted me a temporary 56-day reprieve.
So hey, check me out, I’m just an angry guy railing against the good, charitable, non-profit American Red Cross, right? Let me be clear: There is no doubt that the Red Cross does a lot of great things. But don’t let that “non-profit” status mislead you – blood is big business, and as far as profit goes, the American Red Cross ranks right up there with America’s top Fortune 500 companies.
I’m not the only one who’s tired of the never-ending Red Cross harassment. The Red Cross explains that it’s just that as a poor non-profit, their computer systems are just archaic and out of date. Hmm… I wonder what the author of that article’s blood type is.

My last Red Cross blood donation ended with me being handed a alcohol wipe and being told to “Go clean myself up.” I’ll be going back to donating with only Memorial Blood Centers from now on.

Oh, and luckily, the woman who took me through the pre-donation procedure was too lazy to update my contact information so the Red Cross doesn’t call me because they have my address and phone number from almost 10 years ago.

Really good article . Just remember it’s always better to donate with you local blood centers instead of Red Cross. Don’t let the non-profit face get to you fooled. Support you local centers since they are the one providing blood to you local hospitals and provide jobs.Either way, giving blood is the easiest way for you to give back!

I used to work for the Red Cross, as a telerecruiter. I understand the aggrivation that many people share. Some donors records that I would look at had not been called since (seriously) 2008 or 2009. Others had just been called twice three days ago. As much as I understand that people have busy lives, though, I understand that blood shortages are seriously low. And its not like oil where we can maybe find something else to fuel our cars with. There isn’t a substitute for blood, and people will die without it.

Kate, forgive me if I misunderstood your comment, but to me it sounds like you are saying “We don’t care if we annoy you, in fact we feel justified in annoying you, because our cause is of the utmost importance.” Sorry, but that’s exactly the attitude that turns so many people off, including me. It’s very disrespectful.

I live in the maryland area and decided to donate blood for the first time about 3 or 4 months ago because I was curious as to my blood type and my work has blood drives(they have since stoped). After about 2 months the calls began to start and consider yourself lucky I receive no less then 5-6 calls EVERYDAY 3 in the morning and 3 in the day all the way up to 10 its absurd. I haven’t asked about being removed from the list but that’s what I plan on doing, I googled this to see if it was widespread and it is. I have no problem giving blood from time to time but I would like to do it at my conveince, I don’t have to give it at all. I have o postive blood type by the way.

Perhaps this is a Maryland regional thing because the Red Cross will NOT stop harrasing me too!! For the past 2 years they have been calling me and I repeatedly tell them to remove me from their list and they say they will, but they always call me! The last call I received from them I shouted at them out of frustration and still 1 month later I receive another call. I have O blood too…is there a correlation? Either way this is no way of treating people especially if you want their blood!

Greetings folks. I’m type A+ and when day 56 rolls around they’re calling 2-3 times a day here in Connecticut as well.
While the calls can be a little annoying I don’t have any problem ignoring them until I’m ready to schedule my next donation.

My girlfriend has O negative blood, and lives in West Virginia. She recieves no less than 5 CALLS A DAY from the red cross. Also almost every single day there is another piece of mail from them. We joke that they are Vampires. Its done nothing but cause her to never give blood to the Red Cross again.

My husband donates to Red Cross $20 monthly. They have recently asked if he would be willing to donate more. My husband said “no”. They haven’t stopped calling since. My husband will be stopping his contributions.

I donated blood to the Red Cross and have been getting a call weekly ever since. The last message that I got said that I have the important type O+ blood type that people need… I have A+ blood type and my card proves it…so they’re annoying AND they have my blood type wrong in their calling system.

there are 5 of us in the family, and so that is usually 5 calls per day everyday, no break for sunday! I finally asked “Josh” if I could speak to a supervisor! I am tired of this, i will donate blood as I see fit, and only if a hospital specifically calls me to tell me that they need my blood! I was told that since i specifically said the magic words, “let me speak to a supervisor” that the calls will stop.

I too live in Maryland and have been receiving the ‘collection agency’ type phone calls from the Red Cross. Two, three, and even five times a day to the point where I’ve just gotten frustrated by them. I used to give on a regular basis but the phone calls, mail and now email has just gotten to the point where I want to cut up my donation cards and say screw it. Last night the representative got shitty with me when I asked if they could stop calling until after Christmas because I have been working 7 days a week since Thanksgiving (I own a small business). After her attitude I asked to speak with a supervisor when I was promptly hung up on. Red Cross I hope you read these posts, because I’m done with you.

I’m so glad to hear several other people are having the same issues as myself. I am currently about to bitch out the next person that calls me. They have called me four times in the past half hour. I have previously demanded they take my number off their list. It has happened but only for 3 months at a time and then they start hounding me again. Is it at all possible to get your number permanently removed? I feel like this is on the border of harassment already!!! I’m done donating to the Red Cross. FYI – I also live in Maryland.

Understanding how everyone might feel but just as any job there are way bigger bosses over the telerecruiters that call and yelling at them isent going to solve the problem there just doing there job! If you feel you cant handle ignoring there calls get your number changed or ask to speak to a supervisor and have them remove you, thats really the only way. Workers are fustrated dealing with the people or curse or scream at them im sure… But it is true there is know substitute for blood and sometimes its scary how low a blood shortage could be even forcing doctors to have to choose who gets the life treatment and who doesent. … Any one of you may end up in a situation or a loved one… Just hope you are never put in that position. Even tho calls are annoying the benefits of what you are doing far out wayy that, so really hope people will truly not stop donating because of red cross but think about those people in the hospital first
